Ingredients
Scale
Hot Chocolate Base
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened dutch-processed cocoa powder (Ghirardelli brand recommended)
- 1 ¼ cups whole milk
- ¼ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (Ghirardelli brand recommended)
Additional Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons Baileys Irish Cream flavored liqueur
- Whipped topping (for garnish)
- Drizzle of chocolate syrup (for garnish)
- Mini marshmallows (for garnish)
- Semi-sweet chocolate bar shavings (for garnish)
Instructions
- Combine sugar and cocoa powder. In a small (1.5 quart) saucepot, whisk together the granulated sugar and cocoa powder until no large lumps remain, ensuring a smooth base.
- Heat milk mixture. Whisk in the whole milk and place the saucepot over medium-low heat. Heat the mixture for 3-4 minutes, stirring constantly until it starts to steam and tiny bubbles form around the edges. This prevents burning and allows flavors to meld.
- Melt chocolate chips. Add the semi-sweet chocolate chips to the hot mixture and stir continuously until they have fully melted and combined, creating a rich, creamy consistency.
- Stir in Baileys. Remove the pot from heat and gently stir in the Baileys Irish Cream, blending the flavors without altering the smooth texture.
- Serve and garnish. Carefully pour the hot chocolate into a large 16-ounce mug. Top with whipped cream, a drizzle of chocolate syrup, mini marshmallows, and semi-sweet chocolate shavings for a decadent finish. Serve immediately to enjoy at its best.
Notes
- Use whole milk for the creamiest texture; substitute with a milk alternative if preferred but note texture changes.
- Constant whisking while heating prevents scorching and ensures a silky smooth hot chocolate.
- The type of cocoa powder can affect the richness; Dutch-processed is recommended for a mellow chocolate flavor.
- Adjust the amount of Baileys to taste; add more for a boozier drink or less for a lighter flavor.
- For a non-alcoholic version, omit Baileys and add an extra tablespoon of chocolate chips or a splash of vanilla extract.
- Serve immediately as the melted chocolate can thicken if left to sit.
