Description

This Berry Trifle is a delightful layered dessert featuring fluffy angel food cake, creamy French vanilla pudding, fresh mixed berries, and light whipped topping. Perfect for summer gatherings or holiday celebrations, it’s refreshing, easy to assemble, and visually stunning with its vibrant layers of strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries.

Ingredients

Scale

Pudding

  • 2 (3.4-ounce) packages French vanilla pudding mix
  • 4 cups whole milk

Base Layer

  • 1 store-bought angel food cake, cut into 1-inch squares

Berries

  • 3 (16-ounce) containers strawberries, tops removed and sliced, divided into thirds
  • 2 cups blueberries, divided into thirds
  • 2 cups raspberries, divided into thirds

Topping

  • 8 ounces Cool Whip, divided in half

Instructions

  1. Prepare the pudding: In a large mixing bowl, combine the dry French vanilla pudding mix with 4 cups of whole milk. Use a whisk or hand mixer to beat the mixture thoroughly until it is smooth and no lumps remain. Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate according to package instructions, typically about 5 minutes, until the pudding is set and chilled.
  2. Layer the angel food cake: In a trifle bowl, evenly spread half of the 1-inch angel food cake squares as the base layer.
  3. Add the pudding layer: Spoon half of the chilled French vanilla pudding over the cake pieces. Use a rubber spatula to spread the pudding evenly, covering all the cake.
  4. Layer berries: Distribute one-third of the sliced strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries evenly over the pudding layer, creating a colorful berry layer.
  5. Add whipped topping: Spread half of the Cool Whip evenly over the berries, ensuring to cover them completely.
  6. Repeat the layering: Add the remaining half of the angel food cake pieces over the Cool Whip, then repeat the pudding layer, followed by another one-third portion of each berry. Finally, spread the remaining half of the Cool Whip on top of this berry layer.
  7. Finish with berries: Top the entire trifle with the last third of the strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries, decorating the surface for an attractive finishing touch.

Notes

  • For best results, prepare the pudding ahead of time to allow it to fully set in the refrigerator.
  • You can substitute the angel food cake with sponge cake or pound cake if desired.
  • Fresh berries can be replaced with frozen ones that have been thawed and drained if fresh are unavailable.
  • Chill the assembled trifle for at least 1-2 hours before serving to allow the flavors to meld.
  • This dessert is best served the same day it is assembled for optimal freshness.
