Cinnamon Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • 1 (8 ounce) brick full-fat cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 12 tablespoons heavy cream, if needed
  • cinnamon sugar, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175°C) and line a 12-cup muffin pan with cupcake liners. Set aside.
  2. Sift dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and 1 tablespoon of cinnamon. In a separate measuring glass, combine vanilla, whole milk, and sour cream until smooth. Set aside.
  3. Cream butter and sugar: In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  4. Mix wet and dry ingredients: With the mixer on low speed, alternate adding the flour and milk mixtures in three additions, starting and ending with the flour. Mix until just combined.
  5. Bake: Divide batter into muffin cups and bake for 18-22 minutes until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack.
  6. Make frosting: Beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon, beating until fluffy. Add heavy cream if needed for consistency.
  7. Frost cupcakes: Pipe or spread the cinnamon cream cheese frosting onto cooled cupcakes. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar before serving.
