Cinnamon Sugar Donut Holes Recipe

  • Author: Mariam
  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: Approximately 24 donut holes 1x

Description

These Cinnamon Sugar Donut Holes are perfectly bite-sized, fluffy, and coated in a sweet cinnamon sugar mixture. Deep-fried to golden perfection, they are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, making an irresistible treat for breakfast or dessert.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter

For Frying

  • Oil (for frying, about 2 to 3 inches deep in a skillet)

Cinnamon Sugar Coating

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Prepare Dry Ingredients: Whisk together the flour, salt, nutmeg, cinnamon, and baking powder in a medium-sized bowl. Set this mixture aside. In a small separate bowl, combine the sugar and cinnamon that will be used for coating the donut holes later and set it aside.
  2. Heat the Oil: Pour oil into a large, deep skillet to a depth of about 2 to 3 inches. Heat the oil, maintaining a temperature between 360°F and 375°F. Using a clip-on pot thermometer is recommended for consistent temperature. To test readiness, sprinkle a drop of water into the oil; if it sizzles across the surface, the oil is ready.
  3. Make the Batter: While the oil is heating, whisk together the milk, egg, sugar, and melted butter in a large bowl. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and stir everything together thoroughly until combined. Be careful not to over-mix, as the batter should remain slightly sticky.
  4. Form Donut Holes: Due to the sticky nature of the batter, use two spoons or a small cookie scoop (sprayed with non-stick spray for ease) to scoop about 2 teaspoons of dough per donut hole, shaping them into balls.
  5. Fry the Donut Holes: Carefully drop 5 to 7 dough balls at a time into the hot oil, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan for even cooking. Fry each side for 1 to 2 minutes, flipping as needed. The donut holes will expand and roll in the oil as they cook, becoming golden brown and cooked through.
  6. Coat and Serve: Remove the cooked donut holes from the oil with a slotted spoon and immediately toss them in the prepared cinnamon sugar coating. The coating sticks best when the donuts are hot and fresh. Serve them immediately for the best taste and texture.

Notes

  • Maintain the oil temperature between 360°F and 375°F for best results and to avoid greasy donut holes.
  • Do not overcrowd the skillet during frying to ensure even cooking and prevent the oil temperature from dropping too much.
  • Use a clip-on thermometer for precise oil temperature control.
  • Spraying the cookie scoop with non-stick spray helps in releasing sticky batter easily.
  • Serve donut holes fresh and hot for the best flavor and crunchy exterior.
