  • Author: Mariam
  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 30 lumpia rolls 1x

Description

Lumpia is a delicious Filipino-style spring roll featuring a savory ground pork filling mixed with fresh vegetables, wrapped in thin lumpia wrappers, and deep-fried to a crispy golden perfection. This recipe offers a flavorful and satisfying appetizer or snack that is easy to make and perfect for gatherings or casual meals.

Ingredients

Scale

Filling

  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh ginger, minced
  • 1 lb ground pork
  • 1/4 cup green onion, minced
  • 1/2 cup carrots, minced
  • 3/4 cup green cabbage, finely sliced
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt, to taste
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce

Wrapping and Frying

  • 30 lumpia wrappers or egg roll wrappers
  • 3 cups oil, for frying
  • Water, for sealing wrappers

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Filling: Heat sesame oil in a medium pan over medium-high heat. Add minced garlic and ginger and cook for 20 seconds until fragrant, which enhances the aroma of your lumpia filling.
  2. Cook Ground Pork: Add ground pork to the pan and cook for about 6 minutes or until fully cooked, breaking the meat apart to ensure even cooking.
  3. Add Vegetables: Stir in green onion, minced carrots, and finely sliced cabbage. Cook for an additional 2 minutes, just enough to slightly soften the vegetables while keeping some crunch.
  4. Season the Filling: Mix in onion powder, salt, black pepper, and soy sauce. Taste and adjust seasoning as necessary. Allow the mixture to cool slightly before assembling to prevent wrappers from tearing.
  5. Prepare Wrappers: If using egg roll wrappers, cut them down to a rectangle shape to simulate the look of traditional lumpia wrappers for authentic presentation.
  6. Assemble Lumpia: Place about 1 to 1 1/2 tablespoons of filling near the bottom half of each wrapper. Spread the filling evenly to make rolling easier.
  7. Roll Lumpia: Starting from the bottom, roll up tightly until fully wrapped. Dip a finger in water and run it along the edge of the wrapper, then press to seal securely. Repeat for all wrappers.
  8. Heat Oil: In a cooking pot, heat 3 cups of oil over medium heat, preparing for deep frying.
  9. Fry Lumpia: Deep fry the lumpia in the heated oil until they float to the surface and turn golden brown, indicating they are crispy and cooked through.
  10. Drain and Serve: Remove lumpia with a slotted spoon and place on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce and enjoy!

Notes

  • Adjust salt and soy sauce in the filling according to taste preference or dietary restrictions.
  • Ensure the filling is cooled before assembling to prevent wrappers from tearing or getting soggy.
  • You can substitute ground pork with ground chicken or beef as preferred.
  • For a lighter version, consider baking the lumpia at 400°F (200°C) for 15-20 minutes until crispy instead of frying.
  • Customize your dipping sauce to include sweet chili sauce, vinegar with garlic, or soy sauce mixtures for added flavor.
