Dirt Pie Recipe

Introduction

Dirt Pie is a fun and delicious dessert that combines creamy chocolate pudding with Oreo cookie crumbs and a touch of sweet cream cheese. Topped with gummy worms, this playful treat is perfect for parties or anytime you want a nostalgic, crowd-pleasing dessert.

A pie in a clear glass dish has two visible layers: the bottom layer is thick and light brown, covered by a thick top layer of crushed dark brown cookie crumbs, giving a rough texture. Scattered over the top are colorful gummy worms in bright red, blue, green, orange, yellow, and purple, adding a playful touch. Around the pie, there are whole dark brown sandwich cookies on a white plate and a white bowl filled with more gummy worms on a white marbled surface. Ingredients

  • 40 Oreo sandwich cookies (crushed with cream center; divide into 2 cups for crust, 1 cup for filling, 1 cup for topping)
  • 6 tablespoons salted butter (melted and cooled)
  • 8 ounces (226g) cream cheese (softened)
  • ¾ cup powdered sugar (sifted)
  • 1½ cups cold whole milk
  • 3.9 ounces (110g) instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 8 ounces (226g) whipped topping (thawed)
  • 24 gummy worms

Instructions

  1. Step 1: In a small mixing bowl (3-4 cups), combine 2 cups of crushed Oreo cookies with the melted and cooled butter. Stir thoroughly to coat all the crumbs.
  2. Step 2: Press the buttered Oreo crumbs evenly into the bottom and up the sides of a 9-inch pie plate. Use a sheet of waxed paper and a ½ cup measuring cup to press the crumbs firmly, preventing crumbs from sticking to your hands or utensils. Refrigerate the crust while preparing the filling.
  3. Step 3: In a medium mixing bowl (2-3 quarts), beat the softened cream cheese with a handheld mixer on medium speed until smooth, about 1½ to 2 minutes.
  4. Step 4: Add the sifted powdered sugar to the cream cheese and beat for another 2 minutes until fully incorporated and smooth.
  5. Step 5: In a separate medium bowl, pour the cold milk and sprinkle the instant chocolate pudding mix over it. Whisk with a handheld mixer on low speed or use a whisk until the pudding thickens.
  6. Step 6: Stir 1 cup of the remaining crushed Oreo crumbs into the pudding until evenly distributed.
  7. Step 7: Gently fold the thawed whipped topping into the pudding and cookie mixture using a silicone spatula to keep the filling light.
  8. Step 8: Carefully fold the cream cheese and powdered sugar mixture into the pudding mixture until well combined.
  9. Step 9: Spread the pudding filling evenly into the chilled Oreo crust. Smooth the top with a spatula for an even finish.
  10. Step 10: Sprinkle the final 1 cup of crushed Oreo crumbs over the pie. Cover and chill in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours. Before serving, cut the pie into 8 slices and place 2-3 gummy worms on top of each slice.

Tips & Variations

  • Make sure the cream cheese is softened to avoid lumps in the filling.
  • Use full-fat whipped topping for richer texture or substitute with homemade whipped cream.
  • For extra fun, use different gummy candies or edible flowers to decorate the top.
  • Pressing the crust with a flat-bottomed measuring cup helps create a firm, even base.

Storage

Store leftover Dirt Pie covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. It is best eaten chilled and does not freeze well, as freezing can change the texture of the pudding and whipped topping.

How to Serve

A slice of a no-bake chocolate pie is shown on a white plate with a white marbled surface underneath. The pie has three layers: a dark chocolate cookie crust at the bottom, a thick light brown creamy chocolate filling in the middle with visible air bubbles, and a top layer covered with crushed dark chocolate cookies. Several colorful gummy worms in red, blue, green, yellow, and orange lie on top of the crushed cookies, adding a bright contrast. Some cookie crumbs are scattered around the plate. In the background, the rest of the pie with more gummy worms is visible, along with a white bowl filled with additional gummy worms. A piece of the slice is cut off but still on the plate. FAQs

Can I use regular cookies instead of Oreos for the crust?

Yes, chocolate sandwich cookies similar to Oreos work best for the authentic flavor and texture, but feel free to experiment with other chocolate cookies if preferred.

Why does the cream cheese need to be softened?

Softening the cream cheese ensures it mixes smoothly with the powdered sugar and prevents lumps, resulting in a creamy filling.
