- 2 and 1/4 teaspoons (7g) instant or active dry yeast (1 standard packet)
- 1 Tablespoon brown sugar or granulated sugar
- 1 and 1/2 cups (360ml) warm water (lukewarm– around 100°F (38°C))
- 1 Tablespoon (14g) unsalted butter, melted and slightly cool
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3 and 3/4-4 cups (469-500g) all-purpose flour (spooned & leveled), plus more for hands and work surface
For Boiling:
- 1/2 cup (120g) baking soda
- 9 cups (2.13L) water
For Topping:
- coarse salt or coarse sea salt for sprinkling
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough: Whisk the yeast and sugar into warm water. Allow to sit, then add butter, salt, and flour.
- Knead the Dough: Mix until combined, then knead until soft and slightly tacky.
- Shape the Dough: Form into a ball and let rest.
- Prep for Baking: Preheat oven and prepare baking sheets.
- Form the Pretzels: Divide and shape the dough into pretzels.
- Boil the Pretzels: Boil in water and baking soda briefly.
- Bake: Sprinkle with salt and bake until golden brown.
- Serve: Enjoy warm with cheese sauce if desired.
- Store: Store leftovers at room temperature.
Notes
- You can customize your pretzels by adding toppings like sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or cinnamon sugar before baking.
- To freeze, bake the pretzels as directed, cool completely, then freeze in a zip-top bag for up to 3 months. Reheat in a 350°F (177°C) oven until warmed through.
