Garbage Bread: The Easy Game Day Snack That Starts With Pizza Dough Recipe

  • Author: Mariam
  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Description

Garbage Bread is an easy, savory game day snack made with a rolled pizza dough filled with a hearty mixture of crispy bacon, seasoned ground beef, onions, and melted cheddar cheeses. Baked to golden perfection, this indulgent treat is perfect for sharing during sports events or casual gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat & Vegetables

  • 1/2 pound chopped bacon
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 1 pound lean ground beef

Seasoning & Cheese

  • 1 tbsp steak seasoning
  • 1 ½ cups grated cheddar jack cheese
  • 1 cup grated cheddar cheese

Dough

  • 1 (13.8 ounce) pizza dough (can also use Pillsbury pizza dough from the roll)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 425°F to prepare for baking the garbage bread.
  2. Cook bacon: In a large skillet over medium-low heat, cook the chopped bacon until it’s crisp. Remove bacon and set aside. Drain most of the grease from the pan, leaving a little for flavor.
  3. Sauté onions and brown beef: On medium-high heat, add the chopped onions and ground beef to the skillet. Cook until onions soften and beef is fully cooked. Drain excess grease from the pan.
  4. Combine bacon and season: Reduce heat to medium-low, add the cooked bacon back into the skillet with the meat and onions. Season with steak seasoning and stir in the grated cheddar jack cheese. Continue stirring until cheese is melted and mixture is well combined. Remove from heat.
  5. Prepare the dough: Roll out the pizza dough on a baking sheet to form approximately a 15×10 inch rectangle.
  6. Assemble garbage bread: Spread the meat and cheese mixture evenly over the dough, leaving about an inch border around the edges. Sprinkle the grated cheddar cheese on top of the mixture.
  7. Roll and seal: Starting from the long side, carefully roll the dough up like a jelly roll. Pinch the edges to seal the crust tightly and prevent leaking during baking.
  8. Bake: Place the rolled dough seam-side down on the baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and cooked through.
  9. Cool and serve: Let the garbage bread cool for 5-10 minutes before slicing. Serve warm with your choice of special sauce or dip.

Notes

  • Use lean ground beef to reduce grease.
  • You can substitute the cheddar jack cheese with a blend of your favorite melting cheeses.
  • Be sure to seal the dough edges tightly to keep the filling from leaking during baking.
  • Allow the bread to cool slightly before slicing to maintain the shape and prevent burning.
  • Pair with a tangy marinara or ranch dipping sauce for added flavor.
