Ingredients
Scale
Sushi Rice
- 2 cups sushi rice
- 3 tbsp rice vinegar
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
Fillings
- 4 sheets nori
- 1 cucumber, sliced into thin strips
- 1 avocado, sliced
- 1 cup cooked shrimp or crab meat
Toppings and Seasoning
- 2 tbsp sriracha sauce
- 1 tbsp toasted sesame seeds
Instructions
- Prepare the Sushi Rice: Rinse the sushi rice under cold water repeatedly until the water runs clear to remove excess starch. Cook the rice according to the package instructions. While still warm, season the sushi rice by gently folding in rice vinegar, sugar, and salt to enhance flavor and achieve the perfect sushi rice texture.
- Prepare the Fillings: Slice the cucumber and avocado into thin strips, ensuring they are uniform to make rolling easier. Set aside along with the cooked shrimp or crab meat, ready to assemble.
- Set Up Your Rolling Station: Cover a bamboo sushi rolling mat with plastic wrap to prevent sticking. Lay one nori sheet shiny side down on the mat, positioning it for easy rolling.
- Spread the Rice: Wet your hands with water to prevent sticking and evenly spread about 1 cup of sushi rice over two-thirds of the nori sheet, leaving space at the edges to seal the roll properly.
- Add Fillings: Arrange the shrimp or crab, cucumber strips, and avocado slices neatly along the center of the rice-covered nori sheet. Drizzle 2 tablespoons of sriracha sauce over the fillings for a spicy kick.
- Roll the Sushi: Using the bamboo mat, gently but firmly roll the sushi into a tight cylinder, applying even pressure to ensure the roll holds together. Once rolled, slice the roll into eight equal pieces using a sharp knife dipped in water to prevent sticking.
- Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle toasted sesame seeds over the sliced sushi rolls for flavor and presentation. Serve immediately with soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi if desired.
Notes
- You can substitute cooked shrimp or crab with imitation crab meat or cooked lobster for variation.
- Keep your hands wet while handling sushi rice to prevent sticking.
- Use a sharp knife dipped in water before slicing for cleaner cuts.
- Adjust amount of sriracha based on your spice preference.
- Serve immediately to enjoy the freshest texture and flavor.
