Ingredients
Scale
Caramel Topping:
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 2 Tablespoons corn syrup
French Toast:
- 12 slices thickly sliced bread (day-old or stale bread recommended; French bread works great)
- 5 eggs
- 1 1/2 cups half and half cream
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- dash of cinnamon
Instructions
- Caramel Topping: In a small saucepan, melt butter, brown sugar, and corn syrup over medium heat until smooth, stirring occasionally.
- Prepare French Toast: Pour the caramel mixture onto a large, greased jelly roll pan (18x13x1″). Spread it around to cover the surface.
- Assemble French Toast: Place 12 slices of bread in a single layer to cover the pan.
- Prepare Custard Mixture: In a bowl, mix together eggs, cream, salt, vanilla, and cinnamon. Spoon this mixture over each piece of bread. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
- Bake French Toast: Bake the French toast, uncovered, at 350 degrees for about 25-30 minutes.
- Serve: Remove from the pan and serve hot. Top with syrup, whipped cream, fresh fruit, powdered sugar, or your favorite toppings.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, you can add a splash of Grand Marnier or orange zest to the custard mixture.
- Make sure to use day-old or stale bread for the best texture and absorption of the custard.
