Description

This Overnight Creme Brulee French Toast recipe is a delightful twist on a classic breakfast favorite. With a rich caramelized topping and a creamy custard center, it’s the perfect dish for a special morning treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Caramel Topping:

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons corn syrup

French Toast:

  • 12 slices thickly sliced bread (day-old or stale bread recommended; French bread works great)
  • 5 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups half and half cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • dash of cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Caramel Topping: In a small saucepan, melt butter, brown sugar, and corn syrup over medium heat until smooth, stirring occasionally.
  2. Prepare French Toast: Pour the caramel mixture onto a large, greased jelly roll pan (18x13x1″). Spread it around to cover the surface.
  3. Assemble French Toast: Place 12 slices of bread in a single layer to cover the pan.
  4. Prepare Custard Mixture: In a bowl, mix together eggs, cream, salt, vanilla, and cinnamon. Spoon this mixture over each piece of bread. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
  5. Bake French Toast: Bake the French toast, uncovered, at 350 degrees for about 25-30 minutes.
  6. Serve: Remove from the pan and serve hot. Top with syrup, whipped cream, fresh fruit, powdered sugar, or your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can add a splash of Grand Marnier or orange zest to the custard mixture.
  • Make sure to use day-old or stale bread for the best texture and absorption of the custard.
