This easy-to-make snack features crispy, perfectly popped corn tossed with aromatic spices and a touch of olive oil, making it ideal for gatherings or casual munching.
Ingredients
Scale
Popcorn
- ¼ cup vegetable oil (not required if air popping with a popcorn maker)
- ½ cup popping corn
Flavoring
- Olive oil spray
- ½ to ⅔ cups freshly grated Parmesan cheese (finely grated)
- ¾ tsp fine salt (table salt recommended)
- 1 tsp cayenne pepper (or chili, adjust to taste)
- ½ tsp paprika (optional, for extra color)
Instructions
- Pop the popcorn: Use either a popcorn maker or the stovetop method. Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat.
- Test the oil temperature: Drop in a few kernels; if they rotate slowly, the oil is hot enough.
- Pop the corn: Add the remaining popcorn kernels and cover the pot with a lid. Shake gently every now and then as the popcorn pops.
- Remove from heat: Once the popping slows down and you can count to three between pops, take the pot off the stove and transfer the popcorn to a large bowl.
- Prepare spice mix: In a small bowl, combine fine salt, cayenne pepper, and paprika, mixing well.
- Season the popcorn: Place one third of the popcorn in a large serving bowl. Spray generously with olive oil, then sprinkle with one third of the Parmesan cheese and one third of the spice mix. Repeat this process two more times without tossing.
- Serve: The popcorn flavors will mix naturally as it is enjoyed. Serve immediately for best freshness and crunch.
Notes
- Using table salt instead of flaky salt ensures the seasoning sticks well to the popcorn.
- Adjust cayenne pepper quantity to control the heat level.
- For a lower-fat option, air pop the popcorn and omit the vegetable oil.
- Finely grated Parmesan cheese works best for even coverage and flavor.
- Do not toss the popcorn after seasoning; let the flavors blend naturally as it’s eaten.
