Description

This Sweet Potato and Oatmeal Dog Cake is a wholesome and delicious treat made with dog-safe ingredients like mashed sweet potato, oat flour, and eggs. It’s easy to make, free from harmful additives, and perfect for celebrating your furry friend’s special moments or simply as a healthy snack.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 cup mashed sweet potato (cooked, plain)
  • 1 cup rolled oats or oat flour
  • 2 eggs
  • ¼ cup unsweetened applesauce or water

Optional Ingredients

  • 12 tablespoons natural peanut butter (xylitol-free)
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a small cake pan or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.
  2. Prepare the Ingredients: Mash the sweet potato until smooth. If using rolled oats, grind them into oat flour using a food processor or blender.
  3. Mix the Wet Ingredients: In a medium bowl, combine mashed sweet potato, eggs, and unsweetened applesauce (or water). Stir until smooth and well blended.
  4. Add Dry Ingredients: Stir in oat flour. Optionally add natural peanut butter and cinnamon. Mix until a thick, uniform batter forms, being careful not to overmix.
  5. Check Batter Consistency: Add water a tablespoon at a time if batter is too dry until smooth but thick. It should hold shape yet spread easily.
  6. Transfer to Pan and Bake: Spoon the batter evenly into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top. Bake for 25–30 minutes. Test doneness with a toothpick—it should come out clean.
  7. Cool and Serve: Let the cake cool in the pan for 10–15 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely. Slice into appropriately sized portions for your dog.
  8. Serving Tips: Serve plain or with dog-safe frosting such as plain Greek yogurt or mashed banana.
  9. Texture and Safety Tips: Use oat flour for a smooth texture suited to small or senior dogs. Ensure the cake is fully baked to avoid raw egg risks. Always cool completely before serving to prevent burns.

Notes

  • Use xylitol-free peanut butter, as xylitol is toxic to dogs.
  • If using canned sweet potato, ensure it has no added sugar or spices.
  • This cake can be refrigerated for up to 5 days or frozen for longer storage.
  • Always introduce new foods gradually to monitor for sensitivities.
  • Adjust portion size based on your dog’s breed and weight.
