3 Donut Frosting Flavors Recipe

  • Author: Mariam
  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: Makes enough frosting to glaze approximately 12 donuts

Description

This recipe offers three delicious and easy-to-make donut frosting flavors—strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate—to complement homemade fried donuts. Each frosting provides a unique taste experience, from fruity and fresh strawberry glaze to creamy vanilla and rich chocolate coatings, perfect for enhancing your donuts with vibrant, flavorful toppings.

Ingredients

Scale

Donuts

  • 1 batch homemade donuts without the glaze*

Strawberry Frosting

  • 5 large fresh strawberries (about 100g)
  • 1 and 3/4 cups (210g) confectioners’ sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 Tablespoon strawberry jam or preserves

Vanilla Frosting

  • 3 Tablespoons (43g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 and 1/2 cups (180g) confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 3 Tablespoons (45ml) milk, divided (2 Tbsp + 1 Tbsp)
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt

Chocolate Frosting

  • 3/4 cup (135g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 3 Tablespoons (43g) unsalted butter
  • 1 Tablespoon light corn syrup
  • 1 Tablespoon water

Instructions

  1. Prepare the donuts: Follow your homemade donut recipe and fry the donuts without glazing. Set the warm fried donuts aside while you prepare the frostings.
  2. Make Strawberry Frosting: Puree the fresh strawberries in a food processor until smooth. In a medium bowl, whisk together the strawberry puree, confectioners’ sugar, vanilla extract, and strawberry jam until well combined. Dip each donut into the strawberry frosting 2 or 3 times to get a smooth, thin coating. Optionally, sprinkle with colorful sprinkles before the frosting sets.
  3. Make Vanilla Frosting: In a medium bowl, whisk melted butter, confectioners’ sugar, vanilla extract, 2 tablespoons of milk, and salt until smooth. If the frosting is too thick to dip, whisk in the remaining 1 tablespoon of milk to thin it. Dip the donuts into the vanilla frosting and optionally top with sprinkles before it hardens.
  4. Make Chocolate Frosting: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine chocolate chips, butter, corn syrup, and water. Microwave in 20-second intervals, stirring well after each until the mixture is fully melted and smooth. Dip each donut into the chocolate frosting, then add sprinkles if desired while the frosting is still wet.

Notes

  • The homemade donuts should be prepared without the glaze for best results when applying these frostings.
  • The strawberry frosting is thinner and may require multiple dips for full coverage.
  • Vanilla frosting consistency can be adjusted with milk for easier dipping.
  • Use of sprinkles is optional and adds a decorative touch to the frosted donuts.
  • Ensure chocolate frosting is smooth and warm enough for easy dipping but not too hot to melt the donuts.
