  • Author: Mariam
  • Total Time: 5 minutes
  • Yield: Enough to frost a 9-inch layer cake or 24 cupcakes

Description

This fudgy chocolate frosting is a rich, creamy, and decadent topping perfect for cakes, cupcakes, and other desserts. Made in one bowl with simple ingredients like butter, cocoa powder, powdered sugar, and heavy cream, this frosting can be adjusted to your preferred texture, from light and fluffy to thick and fudgy. It’s easy to prepare, requiring only a mixer and a few minutes, making it a go-to recipe for chocolate lovers.

Ingredients

Scale

Fudgy Chocolate Frosting Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 2/3 cup natural cocoa powder (sifted)
  • 2 ½ cup powdered sugar (sifted)
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream (at room temperature, plus more as needed)
  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp fine sea salt

Instructions

  1. Beat the Butter: In a large bowl using a hand mixer or stand mixer, beat the softened butter on medium speed until creamy and pale, about 2–3 minutes.
  2. Add Cocoa Powder: Add the sifted cocoa powder and mix on low speed until well incorporated. Scrape the sides of the bowl to ensure it’s evenly blended.
  3. Incorporate Powdered Sugar and Cream: Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, alternating with a little heavy cream. Mix on low until incorporated, then increase to medium and beat until smooth and fluffy.
  4. Mix in Vanilla and Salt: Beat in the vanilla extract and salt. Mix for 1–2 more minutes. Adjust consistency by adding more cream 1 tablespoon at a time if too thick, or more powdered sugar if too soft.
  5. Adjust Texture: For a fluffier texture, whip on high speed for another 2–3 minutes. For a fudgier, denser feel, stop mixing once fully combined and smooth.

Notes

  • Make sure the butter is softened but not melted for optimal texture.
  • Sift cocoa powder and powdered sugar to avoid lumps and achieve smooth frosting.
  • Adjust the amount of heavy cream to reach your desired frosting consistency.
  • This frosting is best used immediately or stored in an airtight container in the fridge; bring to room temperature and re-whip before using.
  • For a deeper chocolate flavor, you can use Dutch-processed cocoa powder instead of natural cocoa powder.
