Celebrate the holiday season with these festive Grinchy Pull-Apart Cupcakes. Moist chocolate cupcakes are topped with vibrant, colorful frosting to recreate the iconic Grinch face and Santa hat, creating a fun and interactive dessert that’s perfect for Christmas parties or family gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale

Cupcakes

  • 1 (15.25-oz.) box chocolate cake mix, plus required ingredients as per box directions

Frosting

  • 1 1/2 cups (3 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 6 cups powdered sugar
  • 5 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • Yellow food coloring
  • Red food coloring
  • Green food coloring
  • Black gel icing

Instructions

  1. Prepare Cupcakes: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two muffin tins with cupcake liners. Prepare the chocolate cake batter as directed on the box and evenly divide it between the liners. Bake for about 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow cupcakes to cool completely before decorating.
  2. Make Frosting: In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and powdered sugar together until combined. Add heavy cream, vanilla extract, and kosher salt, then mix until the frosting is smooth and fluffy.
  3. Color Frosting: Divide the frosting into four portions: about 1 1/2 cups into a medium bowl and tint with red food coloring, about 1 cup into a separate bowl left plain white, about 1 tablespoon dyed yellow in a small bowl, and the remaining large portion dyed green. This color division will allow you to create the Grinch face and Santa’s hat details.
  4. Assemble Grinch Face Base: Arrange 13 cupcakes on a serving platter to form the shape of the Grinch’s face, using a reference or video guide for accuracy. Dock each cupcake with white frosting at the top to build the face foundation. Pipe green frosting outlining the edges of the cupcakes, then fill in the middle with more green frosting, smoothing with an offset spatula for a cohesive look.
  5. Create Santa Hat: Stack 5 cupcakes on top of the face formation to form Santa’s hat shape. Pipe red frosting along the edges of these cupcakes to outline the hat, then fill in the center with red frosting and smooth it out with an offset spatula for a polished finish.
  6. Add White Details on Hat: Use the white frosting to pipe decorative trim along the bottom edge and the tip of Santa’s hat to mimic the classic fluffy texture.
  7. Decorate Face: Pipe two large yellow dots for the Grinch’s eyes. With black gel icing, carefully draw the face details including pupils, eyebrows, and mischievous grin, bringing the Grinch character vividly to life.

Notes

  • Ensure cupcakes are completely cooled before frosting to prevent melting.
  • Using an offset spatula helps achieve a smooth, even frosting surface.
  • Refer to a Grinch image or video tutorial while assembling to get the shape and details accurate.
  • Black gel icing works best for fine detailed piping on the face.
  • Store leftover cupcakes in an airtight container for up to 3 days refrigerated.
