Scale
Base
- 1 loaf Italian bread (about 16–17 inches long)
- Olive oil (as needed for brushing)
Toppings
- 1 cup pizza sauce (low-sodium, plain)
- 1 1/2 cups shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- Mini pepperonis (as needed, optional)
- Fresh basil or oregano, chopped (for optional garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (204°C) to ensure it is hot and ready for baking.
- Prepare bread: Cut the loaf in half lengthwise to expose the soft interior. Brush a thin layer of olive oil evenly over the cut surface of each half.
- Spread sauce: Evenly spread the pizza sauce over the oiled bread surfaces.
- Add toppings: Generously sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese over the sauce. Lightly sprinkle Italian seasoning on top. If desired, place mini pepperonis as a topping.
- Bake: Place the prepared bread halves on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 10 to 15 minutes, until the cheese is melted and the edges are lightly toasted.
- Serve: Remove from oven, allow to cool for a few minutes, then slice and serve warm. Garnish with fresh basil or oregano if desired.
Notes
- Use part-skim mozzarella to reduce fat without compromising melting quality.
- For a crispier crust, toast the bread halves lightly before adding toppings.
- Feel free to customize toppings with vegetables or other meats.
- Leftovers can be reheated in the oven wrapped in foil to maintain crispiness.
