Tuna Melt Recipe

Introduction

The tuna melt is a comforting classic sandwich that perfectly combines creamy tuna salad with melted cheddar cheese on toasted bread. It’s simple to make and always satisfying, whether for a quick lunch or a cozy dinner.

The image shows a grilled sandwich cut into two halves stacked on top of each other, placed on a white speckled plate set on a white marbled surface. The sandwich bread is thick, toasted golden brown with a slightly crispy texture, and porous crust. Inside, there are three visible layers, starting with a bottom light brown bread slice, followed by a thick creamy filling mixed with small bits of green herbs and purple onion, then a middle bread slice, a melted creamy white cheese layer with red, yellow, and green tomato pieces on top, finished with the top golden toasted bread slice. The sandwich layers are thick and visibly soft inside with a contrast of colors from the vegetables and creamy filling. Photo taken with an iphone --ar 4:5 --v 7

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 12 ounces canned tuna (drained)
  • 1 celery rib (finely chopped)
  • 1 small red onion (finely chopped)
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons fresh parsley (chopped)
  • Salt (to taste)
  • Freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 8 slices whole-grain or sourdough bread
  • 8 slices cheddar cheese
  • Tomato slices (optional)

Instructions

  1. Step 1: In a medium bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, lemon juice, and crushed red pepper flakes if using. Add the drained tuna, chopped celery, red onion, and parsley. Gently toss to combine and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
  2. Step 2: Butter one side of each bread slice. On the unbuttered side of 4 slices, place a slice of cheddar cheese, then spread a generous layer of the tuna mixture over the cheese. Top with another slice of cheddar cheese and, if you like, add tomato slices. Finish by placing the remaining bread slices on top, buttered side facing out.
  3. Step 3: Heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Cook the sandwiches for 2 to 3 minutes on one side until golden brown. Flip carefully and cook for another 2 to 3 minutes until the other side is toasted and the cheese is melted. You may need to cook in batches depending on skillet size.
  4. Step 4: Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and serve immediately while warm and melty.

Tips & Variations

  • Try swapping cheddar for Swiss or provolone for a different cheese flavor.
  • Add a pinch of garlic powder or Dijon mustard to the tuna salad for extra zing.
  • Use sourdough bread for a tangier base or whole grain for a hearty texture.
  • Include sliced pickles or avocado inside for added crunch and creaminess.

Storage

Store leftover tuna melt sandwiches in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat gently in a skillet or toaster oven to retain the crispy bread and melted cheese. Avoid microwaving to prevent sogginess.

FAQs

Can I use fresh tuna instead of canned tuna?

Fresh tuna can be used, but it requires cooking and flaking before mixing. Canned tuna is preferred for ease and ready-to-eat texture in this recipe.

How do I prevent the bread from getting soggy?

Butter the bread well on the outside before toasting to create a crispy crust. Also, don’t overfill the sandwich with wet ingredients, and cook it on medium heat to allow the bread to crisp up without becoming soggy.
