Black Bean Hummus Recipe

  • Author: Mariam
  • Total Time: 10 minutes
  • Yield: Approximately 1 1/2 cups 1x
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

This Black Bean Hummus is a creamy, flavorful twist on traditional hummus using black beans instead of chickpeas. Packed with garlic, tahini, lime juice, and a hint of cumin and cayenne, it’s perfect as a nutritious dip or spread for vegetables, pita chips, or whole-grain crackers.

Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients

  • 1 15-ounce can black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons tahini
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Olive oil, for drizzling
  • Paprika, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Combine ingredients: Place the black beans, minced garlic, tahini, fresh lime juice, extra-virgin olive oil, ground cumin, salt, and cayenne pepper (if using) into a food processor.
  2. Blend until smooth: Process the mixture until it becomes smooth and creamy, stopping occasionally to scrape down the sides of the bowl to ensure even blending.
  3. Adjust consistency and seasoning: Taste the hummus and adjust the seasoning with additional salt if needed. If the hummus is too thick, add a tablespoon of water or additional olive oil to reach your desired consistency and blend again briefly.
  4. Garnish and serve: Transfer the hummus to a serving bowl and drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with paprika for color and extra flavor. Serve chilled or at room temperature with fresh vegetables, pita chips, or whole-grain crackers.

Notes

  • Use well-rinsed canned black beans to avoid any metallic canned taste.
  • If you prefer a smoother texture, peel the skins off the black beans before blending.
  • The lime juice gives a fresh tang that complements the smoky black beans; adjust to taste.
  • This hummus can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  • For a spicier version, increase the cayenne pepper or add a dash of smoked paprika.
