These bite-sized pinwheels feature a savory blend of lean ground beef, onions, garlic, diced tomatoes, and sharp cheddar cheese, all seasoned with Worcestershire sauce and Dijon mustard. Ideal as an appetizer, snack, or party treat, they’re easy to prepare and sure to please both kids and adults alike.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat Filling

  • 16 oz lean ground beef
  • ½ cup diced yellow onions
  • 1 tsp minced garlic
  • 1 cup canned diced tomatoes, drained
  • 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 Tbsp Dijon mustard
  • ½ tsp kosher salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper

Dough & Toppings

  • 16 oz pizza dough
  • 8 oz Cabot Seriously Sharp Cheddar cheese, shredded and divided
  • ½ Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Cook beef mixture: Using a large skillet, add ground beef, diced onions, and minced garlic. Place over medium-high heat and cook, stirring occasionally, for 7-9 minutes or until the beef is fully cooked and browned.
  2. Add seasonings: Stir in drained diced tomatoes, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, kosher salt, and black pepper. Continue cooking until all liquid has evaporated. Drain any excess liquid if necessary to prevent sogginess.
  3. Preheat oven: Set your oven to 400°F (200°C) to prepare for baking the pinwheels.
  4. Prepare muffin tin: Spray a 12-cup muffin tin with nonstick cooking spray and set it aside for later.
  5. Roll pizza dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll the pizza dough into a 12” by 15” rectangle to create an even base for your filling.
  6. Add filling: Evenly spread the cooked hamburger mixture over the dough, leaving a ½-inch border around the edges. Sprinkle about three-quarters of the shredded cheddar cheese evenly on top of the filling.
  7. Form log and slice: Starting from one of the shorter sides, carefully roll the dough into a tight log. Using a serrated knife, slice the log into 12 equal pinwheels and place one pinwheel into each cup of the prepared muffin tin.
  8. Bake pinwheels: Brush the tops of each pinwheel lightly with olive oil, then sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes, until the tops are lightly golden brown.
  9. Add more cheese: Remove the muffin tin from the oven and sprinkle the remaining shredded cheddar cheese over the pinwheels. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese has melted completely.
  10. Cool and serve: Allow the pinwheels to cool in the muffin tin for several minutes before removing. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

  • Drain the diced tomatoes thoroughly to avoid soggy dough.
  • Use a serrated knife to slice the rolled dough log cleanly without squishing the filling.
  • You can substitute cheddar cheese with your preferred sharp cheese or a blend for varied flavor.
  • These pinwheels can be reheated in the oven at 350°F for 5-7 minutes to restore crispiness.
  • For a spicier kick, add a pinch of chili flakes to the beef mixture while cooking.
